The Eleven Dwarfs

On-pitch life-saving? Check. Riot Police? Check. Eating contest? Check. Team of dwarf footballers? Check. Welcome to this week's Football Circus...

Kiev Midfielder Saves Rival's Life

Most teams will have the odd player that their fans consider a 'hero' - be it for their goalscoring prowess, loyalty to the club or perhaps their leadership qualities. This week though, fans of Dynamo Kiev fans can truly say they have a hero in their ranks in midfielder Jaba Kankava - and even fans of fierce rivals Dnipro would likely find it hard to disagree.

Kankava turned out for Kiev against Dnipro at the weekend and watched as his side's keeper Denys Boyko accidentally knocked Dnipro's captain Oleg Gusev out cold, as Boyko's knee clashed with Gusev's head. Quick to react, Kankava rushed to the scene like an action hero, putting his hand down Gusev's throat in order to clear his airways in case of him swallowing his tongue.

Gusev recovered after medics stretchered him off the pitch. The Kiev doctor confirmed:

"He sustained medium concussion, several bruises and a bruised jaw".

Despite Kankava's heroics, Dnipro ran out 2-0 winners.

Riot Police to Ref's Rescue in Copa Libertadores

Riot police are often called into action during South American football matches - a sad yet true fact. However their involvement is usually limited to separating rival sets of fans from each other. That was not the case last Thursday evening in the Copa Libertadores showdown between Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle and Argentine outfit San Lorenzo, as the riot police were forced to shield the referee and his fellow assistants from incensed players.

Referee Carlos Amarilla controversially awarded Independiente a late penalty and by virtue, the opportunity to equalise in the 95th minute. They duly converted the penalty and it was subsequently followed by the full time whistle. Cue the San Lorenzo players descending upon Amarilla, furiously seeking to give him a piece of their collective minds.

Fully aware of how further chaos could unfold, the capable riot police swarmed onto the pitch and surrounded Amarilla and his fellow officials, fending them from the angry mob of players.
San Lorenzo midfielder Ignacio Piatti said of his team's reaction:

"We are very angry as during the match the referee whistled everything for them.

"Every time there was a close call, they got it".

The result meant San Lorenzo remain bottom of Group 2 of the Copa Libertadores, level on points with Independiente del Valle.

Cosmos Player Bites Off More than he can Chew in April Fool's Joke

So the New York Cosmos are finally back in existence...who knew? After three years of promotional hype including a friendly against Manchester United for Paul Scholes' testimonial when he first retired, the Cosmos returned to competitive action last year, taking their place in the second division of the North American Soccer League. They have made it known that they wish to join the MLS in the future. If their eating habits which were on show in this prank are anything to go by though, that won't be happening anytime soon...

The Cosmos released a video on their official website this week (April Fool's Day to be exact), featuring Peri Marosevic. Marosevic was the unwitting victim of an April Fool's prank which his club were behind. With the team eating out in 'Buffalo Wild Wings' restaurant in New York, Marosevic was lured into an eating contest with 'busboy Kevin'. Little did Marosevic realise that 'Kevin' was in fact Takeru Kobayashi, a man dubbed the "world's best competitive eater".

Marosevic could only look on in shock (partially due to his genuine surprise, partially due to the fact that he'd just downed 18 buffalo wings himself, we presume), as the greasy-fingered 'Kevin' devoured an astonishing 58 buffalo wings, before revealing himself to be the mighty (and peculiarly skinny) Kobayashi.

The Eleven Dwarfs

Here at Football Circus we strive to bring you the most entertaining football stories from around the world, week in, week out. Oftentimes it's a struggle to find a story that fits our, shall we say 'unusual' criteria. We've had animal pitch invaders, UFO sightings over football stadiums, even a prostitute-robbing footballer. We thought we'd seen it all. Until this week, when we discovered that Youtube channel Barcroft TV, have uploaded a mini (no pun intended) documentary, featuring Gigantes do Norte - a Brazilian football team made up entirely of dwarfs.

The team was formed in 2006 with the aim of fighting size prejudice in their home country. While they take on teams of taller stature, the team are permitted to get on each other's shoulders when defending free-kicks.

Their star striker is Casimero Ribeiro, AKA Wagner Love, so called for his dreadlocked resemblence to the former CSKA striker. Ribeiro told Barcroft TV:

"My life changed because at one point I was struggling to deal with the prejudice in the streets, but now I receive compliments, wonderful compliments when I play".

Amazingly, Gigantes do Norte ("Giants of the North") play on full size pitches, despite their smallest player standing at only 3ft 3in. They regularly draw crowds as large as 30,000.

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

It's been a relatively quiet week on the Balotelli front, all things considered. With Milan already out of the Champions League, Balotelli's most recent action came last weekend when he helped the Rossoneri to a 3-0 victory over Chievo. The match saw Kaka grab a brace in what was his 300th appearance for Milan. Balo could not hide his delight for his teammate, tweeting:

"Well done guys! Super Kaka! 300 appearances! Congratulations brother!".

He went on to tweet a photo of himself and Milan pal Robinho, both looking very happy indeed.

But there's always somebody to rain on Balotelli's parade and this week they came in the form of ex-Chelsea, Parma and Inter striker Hernan Crespo. Speaking to FCInterNews.it, the Argentine joined a growing list of former players in deriding Super Mario:

"There are three things needed to make a good.

"One is your legs, another is your heart and the last one is your head. Using all three, your talent can emerge.

"Balotelli is missing some ingredients, I would define it as wasted talent because his talent is enormous. He is maybe missing something in his head a little bit.

"Being a great champion doesn’t mean just scoring goals, but also what you say and do".

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Roma to retire Number 10 Jersey when Totti leaves

Roma president James Pallotta has suggested the club will retire the number 10 jersey when Francesco Totti finally decides to hang up his boots, as a mark of respect to a man who is already a club legend. With Roma flying high in second position in Serie A, Champions League football is all but guaranteed for the team from Italy's capital for next season and their form is down in no small part to Totti's impressive performances of late.

Questioned by Sky Sport 24 about Totti's hero status at Roma, Pallotta (who also owns the Boston Celtics), remarked:

"It would be great to be able to replicate players like him, De Rossi and Florenzi.

"In Boston we had Larry Bird, we had Paul Pierce, and it was very difficult to decide to sell him, but it was good for the team.

"I’d like to have players who are 10-15 years in the squad.

"When Francesco stops? We will retire the number 10 jersey, there is no doubt. His farewell won’t last just an hour either, it will be at least a month".

Totti's form has been so impressive of late that talk is rife in the Italian media that he could be in line for a recall to the Italian national squad in time for the World Cup.

Football Recommendation of the Week

- Uruguay 2014 Home and Away Jerseys; With the World Cup just around the corner, sports shops worldwide will be cashing in on replica jersey sales. Of all we've seen so far, Uruguay's have really caught our eye. Maybe it's the simplicity or the non-garish approach that Puma have taken but we these are the pick of the bunch.

Where Is The Love?

The world of football can be a cruel place. David Moyes will vouch for that - Fans turning on him this week with less than a season under his belt at Manchester United. We also saw Jose Mourinho's take great pride in turning Arsene Wenger's 1,000th game in charge of Arsenal into a veritable nightmare. Over in Spain, the latest Clasico was rife with foul play and saw Sergio Ramos sent off for the 19th time in his career. It begs the question "Where is the love?". Well ladies and gentlemen, the love is right here on Football Circus this week. We bring you a tale of a past-life romance for Arsene Wenger and a love triangle in Serie A. We also report on sex noises during an MLS match, Snoop Dogg and another busy week for Mario Balotelli. OK, maybe you won't feel all fuzzy inside but your faith in the football world's ability to produce quite frankly ludicrous stories on a weekly basis will be restored. Welcome, once again, to Football Circus.

Wenger has had No 'Plan B' for Centuries

The Frames once sang "Sometimes I need a revelation". Following his Arsenal side's 6-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend and their recent nosedive in form, Arsene Wenger's thoughts may echo something similar. And a revelation has indeed come for him in fact, though perhaps not in the form he had hoped for. A 'spiritual healer' by the name of Stephanie Cohan has 'revealed' that she and Mr. Wenger were engaged to be married once upon a time...in a past life.

Miss Cohan, who hails from Bromley in the UK, made the outlandish claim in an interview with News Shopper. She has alleged to the newspaper, that in the 15th century, she and Wenger embarked on a romance but not under their current guises...For back then, Cohan was Joan of Arc while Wenger was the Dauphine of France.
Said Cohan:

"Mr Wenger and I were engaged in a previous life.

"We had a romance when I was Joan of Arc and he was the Dauphine of France.

"He was the same man we know him to be today. Highly intelligent but very stubborn. His big problem is he never has a plan B.

"Arsenal will not win the Premier League this season because of that".

If Cohan's comments are anything to go by, Arsenal fans may not hold out too much hope for their season finale.

Mutu to Star in Snoop Dogg Video

Romanian striker Adrian Mutu is being lined up to star in an upcoming Snoop Dogg video. The ex-Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan and Fiorentina man, who rarely seems far from the limelight, is the subject of the bizarre link after being recommended for a role in the video by its director Massimo Caroletti.

According to Caroletti, Mutu is destined for a future in showbiz once he finally hangs up his boots:
"So far I’ve used other actors in the videos we’ve made, but I found that Mutu has great potential.
"I’ve personally championed Adrian’s inclusion, and the whole team sees him as a good candidate.
"We will do the casting and auditions, and only then (we) will shoot the video. We will be filming in mid-April at Gyor ETO Stadium with a team of over 20 people.

"I’ve known him for two years and we've built a friendship that grows stronger every day. I respect him very much because he is sincere and serious person. From my point of view, his future is in showbiz".
35 year old Mutu, currently still playing for Petrolul Ploiești in his home country, last week posted an Instagram picture of a newspaper article linking him with the role, accompanied by the caption: "Coming soon!!stay tuned!!".

Fans Moaning? Orgasmic Football? Nope, Just the Sound of a Woman having Sex during Match

Saturday's MLS encounter between Columbus Crew and Philadelphia Union was broadcast on the Time Warner Cable Sports Channel (TWSC). The game finished 2-1 to Columbus Crew and all the goals were scored in just over an hour of play. But it was action of a different kind in the 75th minute that grabbed the real headlines here.

Seemingly unbeknownst to the TV channel, fans managed to hijack one of the TWSC microphones as the match was broadcast live across the good ol' US of A, albeit for a very brief period. The television audience were left stunned as the sound of a woman having sex (complete with moans of "Aw yeah, get in there!") could be heard as the not-quite-as-exciting match played out.

The audio mishap went on for almost a minute before the network wised up to what was happening.
TWSC later released the following statement:

"We apologize to viewers who heard inappropriate noises during our telecast of yesterday's Columbus Crew game.Iit is unfortunate that a fan prank interfered with our live production and we will prevent that from happening in our future telecasts".

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

Balotelli has this week been publicly given some advice from his national team manager, Cesare Prandelli. Prandelli's words of wisdom have come on foot of some severe criticism for Balotelli of late from the media, fans and even some former Milan players and staff. The Italian manager told the press:

"Balotelli is an important player for the national team, like a lot of other players,” Prandelli said while attending an Illumia promotional event.

"But he must arrive at the World Cup fully prepared.

"It would serve Balotelli well to listen to Seedorf and to use the emotions he is feeling to express himself out on the pitch.

"When an emotion is channelled well it is always appreciated.

"He is in good hands, Seedorf knows how to handle great champions as he was one himself.
"Balotelli has always behaved well with the national team".

Whether or not Balo will take Prandelli's words on board remains to be seen, but an elusive tweet which he posted this week was interpreted by some members of the media as a hint that his relationship with AC Milan was fast deteriorating. Balotelli tweeted a picture with the caption:

"Life is full of fake people. Do not believe in anybody".

Balo was quick to clarify that his tweet was not directed at his club by posting a follow up tweet the next day however, which roughly translated as:

"I was referring to everyday life. (I don't think it was a controversial statement) bah! FORZA MILAN anyway".

Balotelli then proved just how dedicated he was to the Milan cause on Wednesday evening, scoring a wonderful free kick to help the team to a 2-0 victory over Fiorentina.

While Super Mario's future at AC Milan may seem a little more secure, he would appear to be back on the market when it comes to his love life. Girlfriend (ex?) Fanny Neguesha has been busy this week, updating her Instagram relationship status to 'single' and both parties have deleted photos of the other from their Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts. The news comes after last week's allegations that Balotelli partook in a 'foursome' with a Playboy model, his brother Enoch and Enoch's wife.

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Icardi again Professes Love for Wanda Nara, Maxi Lopez's Ex-Girlfriend

You may recall that back in November we reported on a love triangle involving Inter Milan's Mauro Icardi, his former teammate Maxi Lopez and Lopez's ex-girlfriend Wanda Nara. Icardi at the time had tweeted Nara:
"I love you, it is not simple to say how I feel, because I discovered that those two words carry with them one feeling without limits!".

For her part, Nara had by then dumped Maxi Lopez and publicly bad-mouthed their sex life, or lack thereof. Questions were asked as to whether Icardi had taken advantage of Lopez's faltering relationship with Nara to make his move, while many pondered whether Nara indeed had feelings for Inter star Icardi.

Was Icardi's love unrequited? Well considerring Nara's Instagram account now looks something like, this, it would seem that particular question has been met with an emphatic "no":

As if Maxi Lopez hadn't had his face rubbed in it enough, his old buddy Icardi celebrated scoring for Inter against Atalanta by revealing a t-shirt with the message: "WAN I LOVE YOU".

Chin up, Maxi son. We hear Fanny Neguesha's available. Perhaps the two could exchange numbers. They could call it, "When Maxi met Fanny". Although that sounds somewhat like an ad for sanitary towels so maybe not.

Four for Two Balotellis

This week on Football Circus: Footballers with bags over their heads; The Simpsons; a 'Prophet' suing Sports Channel, Liverpool and Twitter and; Mario Balotelli misbehaving.

Bag It Up - Mexican Side Protest with Bags on Heads

Unpaid footballers from Mexico's second division club Celaya have taken an unusual step in protest against their club as they seek two months worth of wages. In the official team photograph before their game against Merida last Saturday, the players posed with brown paper bags over their heads, with Peso symbols, the words "Pay me" and sad faces drawn on.

If nothing else, the move has grabbed the headlines in the team's home country of Mexico and the Mexican players' association has announced on Twitter:

"The appropriate measures are being taken and the situation is being resolved".

Football Teams Hopeful Simpsons can make them some D'oh as Merchandise Deals signed

Barcelona have this week followed Chelsea's lead in announcing a sponsorship deal with The Simpsons. In an era where clubs have official have official potato crisp sponsors (we're looking at you Manchester United), deals to create club-branded Simpsons merchandise are perhaps not completely absurd. The Catalan club stated on their official website:

"Barcelona and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products have unveiled ‘Simpson-ised’ versions of Messi, Neymar, Xavi and Iniesta, as part of a campaign featuring a collaboration between the famous American series and the club.

"The agreement, which runs until 2015, provides for cooperation to create a broad product line of merchandising.

"Apart from FC Barcelona, other teams that have joined the collaboration (includes) Chelsea, Juventus, FC Porto, Boca Juniors, Corinthians and Zenit".

It would appear The Simpsons really are suffering from football fever at the moment and plans for a football themed episode, where Homer referees a game at this summer's World Cup in Brazil, are underway.

Fox's Jeffrey Godsick said of The Simpsons' seemingly sudden football obsession:

"2014 is the year of soccer with the FIFA World Cup, serving to connect fans from cities, towns and villages around the world to experience the biggest sporting event.

"This is the perfect opportunity to present a line of soccer merchandise, promotions and content that will leave an indelible imprint on The Simpsons fans around the world".

'Prophet' to Sue TV Channel, Liverpool and Twitter

A self-proclaimed Zimbabwean 'prophet' is set to sue South Afrian sports channel SuperSport after they broadcast a prediction from him in December that Liverpool would win the 2013-14 Premier League. The 'prophet', Uebert Angel who is head of the Spirit Embassy Church, is allegedly seeking £950,000 from the television channel as well as seeking damages from Liverpool and Twitter.

As it now looks unlikely that the Merseyside club will lift the Premier League trophy, Angel is purporting that his reputation has been damaged.

In a letter to a court in Harare, Angel's representatives outlined:

"The plaintiff claims compensation considering his character and stature as a prophet with great following who is respected the world over by religious, social and political leaders.

"It’s difficult to rehabilitate completely a reputation even if it is proved in court that the statement was misguided".

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

Balo's been a bad boy it would seem. Yes, it's been a turmultuous week for the focus of this weekly segment. As Milan fans openly criticised the team and staged protests this week, they have singled out Balotelli as one of the main reasons the team have performed so poorly this season. Their ire has been met with a mixed reaction from Milan staff and former players. Milan CEO Adriano Galliani raced to Balo's defence in an interview with Sky Italia:

"Balotelli? I’m very happy with the purchase of Balotelli and so are the fans. Without him we would not have gotten into Europe.

"It’s unfair to criticize him, he has scored the most goals for Milan.

"He has done so much for the club and I think we are giving to much attention to these protests".

Similarly, Milan great Paolo Maldini has spoken out in Mad Mario's defence, outlining his belief that Balotelli has not failed the club, but that the club may have failed Balotelli. Speaking with Gazzetta dello Sport, Maldini said:

"Balotelli is still not a champion".

"It's the same with Pato. The day I see him put the team on his shoulders and drag them for 90 minutes then he will be. He's only done it for short periods".

"I don't know, but I get that impression that if he had gone to Juventus, a team with clear ideas and a tough coach and solid group of Italians, he would make the leap".

These comments were preceded by criticism of the Italy striker by ex-Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta, who, while not writing off Balotelli, told Sky Sports Italia that he does not consider Balotelli to be "world class".

But opinions on Balotelli's on-pitch performances were a footnote when it came to Balotelli stories this week, as he was the focus of another scandal. And with that, we shall swiftly move onto our Italian Football Story of the Week...

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Balotelli, Higuain Rocked by Allegations from Playboy Model Girlfriend of Inter Star Saphir Taider

Veronica Graf, the Playboy model girlfriend of Inter Milan star Saphir Taider, has alleged that she had a 'foursome' with Mario Balotelli, his brother Enoch and a second female (rumoured by some media outlets to have been Enoch's wife). Furthermore, she has claimed she had an affair with lower league striker George Alfieri and was "approached" by Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain.

The allegations come on foot of Graf's appearance on the Italian version of the 'Big Brother' television show, however her comments were not broadcast on the show itself as producers feared legal action against them.

Balotelli (Mario that is) will certainly not welcome the allegations as he is currently in a relationship with Belgian model Fanny Neguesha. The striker has also recently been confirmed as the father of ex-girlfriend Rafaella Fico's daughter Pia. Inter's 22 year old midfielder Taider is also likely to be unimpressed by his girlfriend's behaviour, even if the allegations prove to be fabricated.

With Inter and AC Milan struggling to impress this season and lying in fifth and eleventh positions in Serie A respectively, fans may see a more exciting finish to their sides' seasons off the pitch rather than on it.
