Zenit, Zlatan and Zanetti and the Curious Case of the Nazi Washing Powder

Sir Alex Ferguson once famously said: "For me, the most fundamental ingredients which go into making football the most truly exciting and entertaining game in the world are: Dogs, on-pitch riots in Russia and Ariel washing powder boxes that carry Nazi connotations". Or was that Arsene Wenger? Oh wait, it was neither. But they might and so might you after reading this week's Football Circus! So get stuck in...

Football Circus Clown Quote of the Week

"Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball. They could, for example, have tighter shorts".

- Sepp Blatter on how to increase interest in women's football

Zenit Match Abandoned after Fans invade Pitch - Captain Punched in Head

Zenit St. Petersburg took on rivals Dynamo Moscow on Sunday, but the match had to be abandoned after 87 minutes as Zenit fans lost the run of themselves and invaded the pitch.

With Zenit 4-2 down, they were on course to surrender their top-of-the-table position to CSKA Moscow. Enraged fans stormed the pitch, forcing the referee to call a halt to proceedings. Zenit manager Andre Villas Boas attempted to reason with the mob-like crowd, but to no avail. One fan was even caught on camera punching Dynamo captain Vladimir Granat in the head, leaving him with concussion.

Zenit have subsequently released a statement on their fans' unruly actions:

"The behaviour of the fans is affecting in the most serious way their own club, the players and our many millions of supporters.

"At present the police and the club are trying to find the fan and we are preparing evidence for a criminal case."

Meanwhile, Dynamo manager Stanislav Cherchesov told local television:

"I would not want to play. If I was hit, would you force me to go back on to the field? I would not want to do that. The player was hit in the face a few times and he says I don't want to go back out there. What can you do?".

The pitch invasion will likely result in disciplinary action against Zenit, likely depriving them of any slim hopes they had for lifting the title.

Three Dogs take to Pitch in Bolivia - Ball Boy Comes to the Rescue

A Bolivian league match between Universitario Sucre and The Strongest was held up last week as not one, not two, but three dogs ran onto the pitch. The three little mutts appeared to be having a great time - that was until a Universitario defender recklessly attempted to grab one in order to remove it from the pitch, with little success.

The defender's efforts to remove the dog, looked a little on the aggressive side and the dog was seen to fight him off. A ball boy, now being hailed as a national hero, interrupted, scorning the player for his mishandling of the animal and then chasing after the pooch to remove him safely.

Univeristario's keeper was unimpressed with the ball boy's actions, screaming at him for getting involved.

Zlat's Entertainment - Ibra is Mr. Popular

We love Mario Balotelli so much here at Football Circus that we dedicate a segment to him every week. Another striker capable of entertaining the masses both on and off the field is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ibra has featured in many past editions of this very blog and we would go on record as considerring ourselves fans of the big Swede. It became very apparent this week that we are not alone in that regard.

As we by now know, Sweden narrowly missed out on World Cup qualification, robbing the world of Zlatan filled summer. Never fear though, for a host of current and former Brazilian footballers in addition to a few Brazilian celebrities, have collaborated to start a viral campaign to get Ibra to the World Cup. The #VEMIBRA campaign begin in earnest this week, with the likes of Ronaldo, Dani Alves and Bebeto urging Ibrahimovic to come to Brazil this summer and join them to watch one World Cup match. Ibra himself has previously stated "A World Cup without me is nothing to watch", so they may have their work cut out for them.

Zlatan was also subjected to ridicule this week, from PSG teammates Marco Veratti and Salvatore Sirigu, along with manager Laurent Blanc, as he gave an acceptance speech having been named as the Ligue 1 Player of the year. It seems that Ibra's French isn't quite as polished as his football, as Veratti, Sirigu and Blanc were caught on camera in hysterics and Zlat blundered his way through the speech.

Washing Powder Manufacturer told to Clean Up Act after World Cup Promo goes Wrong

Washing Powder giants Ariel have caused a stir in Germany after their special edition World Cup packaging was seen to have Nazi-esque connotations.

The boxes were made to look like football jerseys with the number '88' on them. The '88' referenced the amount of washes Ariel suggest can be done from just one box. The boxes also noted a "new concentration" (this regarded a new concentrated powder being used).

Cue members of the public putting 2 and 2 together (or 8 and 8 as the case may be) and coming up with 'Nazi-sympathisers!!'.

Ariel is close to the word 'Arier' which is German for Aryan. 88 is a number connected to Neo-Nazi's as each 8 (apparently) stands for 'H' (the eight letter of the alphabet) - an abbreviated version of 'Heil Hitler'.

Additionally, the mention of the word "concentration", given the rest of the evidence, was thought to be a possible reference to concentration camps.

Parent company Proctor and Gamble have been forced to remove the boxes from the shelves and were quick to release a statement on the matter:

"P&G is committed to the values of tolerance, respect, diversity and humanity. We regret if people came to see the wrong associations and we resolutely dissociate ourselves from any right-wing (Nazi) body of thought".

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

At this stage, we know that Mario Balotelli is fond of all things social-media. This week, he's been on Instagram, uploading a video of him burning his sleeping brother with a hot lighter (http://instagram.com/p/nsooO3rj0w/). In a slightly more responsible Twitter post, Balotelli lauded Inter Milan legend, and former teammate of Balo's, Javier Zanetti, who played his last match at the San Siro for Inter last weekend. The striker wrote:

"Javier Zanetti is an example of humanity and professionalism for all of us! Big Pupi!".

On the pitch, Super Mario has had little to smile about with his Milan team losing 2-1 to Atalanta. Balotelli hit the woodwork in each half, but failed to get on the scoresheet with Milan's lone goal coming in the form of an O.G. from Atalanta defender Gianpaolo Bellini. The Rossoneri had further reason to be unhappy as their Guinea international Kevin Constant was racially abused by opposition fans after he conceded a penalty, with a banana even being thrown towards him. To his credit, Constant played on.

Meanwhile, Balotelli's agent Mino Raiola has rejected rumours that his client will be leaving AC Milan this summer. Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, Raiola said:

"Galliani told me that Mario is not for sale, and this makes us very happy.

"From now to August 31, there will be a lot of rumours about his future, but it is not a problem".

On Tuesday Balotelli was, unsurprisingly, named in Italy's 30-man provisional World Cup squad. He'd have to something monumentally silly to blow his chances of making the full squad. Surely he wouldn't...would he?

On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, Mr. Balotelli has today hit the headlines for allegedly getting into a fight outside 'Hollywood' nightclub in Como on Sunday. Balotelli's phone was apparently stolen while he was in the nightclub and after seemingly identifying the thief, Balo and his sidekick Robin, sorry, brother Enoch, got into a scuffle. Despite Mino Raiola's insistence earlier in the week that Super Mario would be going nowhere this summer, word has it that Milan president Silvio Berlusconi is now intent on selling the star after these latest rumours.

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Zanetti given Memorable Send Off

Last week we reported on how Inter Milan stalwart Javier Zanetti had announced his retirement following his side's 1-0 defeat against city rivals AC Milan. Zanetti played his final match at the San Siro for the Nerazzurri at the weekend against Lazio and his team gave him a send off to remember.

His swansong ended in a 4-1 victory but it was not just the scoreline that Zanetti could be pleased with. The Argentine wore a captain's armband with the caption 'ZANETTI 4 EVER', and had the names of every Inter Milan player he ever played with included on it. Teammates also wore jackets bearing Zanetti's famous number four.

The Inter legend did not start the match but was brought on as a 52nd minute substitute and as the full time whistle went, he was seen weeping at what had signalled the end an illustrious career. A montage of his time at the club was then shown in the stadium, with fans giving him a standing ovation.

Zanetti, clearly overwhelmed by the occasion, had the following to say:

"I really struggled to hold back the tears, I'm crying on the inside. It's an amazing, unforgettable evening. Lots and lots of images passed through my mind tonight. I thank the fans and the Moratti family for the career I've been able to have and all the love they've given me. I could see what sort of atmosphere there was even before the game - incredible. I've always been proud to defend these colors. It wasn't easy to take this decision. I've given everything I had. I'm glad to be able to quit when I'm physically and mentally fit. I'll tell the lads who pull on the Inter jersey in future that they have to honor it and defend it as I've had the privilege of doing. It's important to have that sense of belonging and understand what it means to play for Inter and defend these colors across the world. That's what they need to understand. I'll miss lots of things: the dressing room, drinking mate with Samuel and Milito, the training camps. I'll carry it all with me for the rest of my life".

Despite his playing career coming to an end, Zanetti will still have a role at Inter as he takes up a position as vice-president of the club.

- 1000 Football Shirts; The Colours of the Beautiful Game (Bernard Lions, Carlo Ancelotti); 999 football shirts not enough for you? Fine, well here's 1000. Probably not the most groundbreaking book you'll find leading upto this year's World Cup, but entertaining nonetheless if you're a bit of a football jersey connoisseur. Perfectly acceptable coffee table book.

The Tale of the Footballer, the Kebab and the Police

We have reached our 60th edition of Football Circus and what better way to celebrate than to regale our beloved readers with some of the most bizarre stories you're likely to come across this week on a football website? What have we got lined up? A fan being killed by a flying toilet; The tale of the German footballer, the kebab and the police; Some casual nepotism and; Anderson getting on the wrong side of Pope Francis. So prepare to be flabergasted and welcome, as always, to Football Circus...

Football Circus Clown Quote of the Week

"I'm as happy as I can be...but I have been happier".

- Ugo Ehiogu

Papa Don't Preach - Because Anderson Won't Listen

Fiorentina loanee Anderson has found himself in a spot of bother after getting a little too snap-happy during a team visit to the Vatican. The Brazilian, on loan from Manchester United, uploaded a photo of Il Papa to his Instagram account last week, along with a video of the interior of the Sistine Chapel.

The side from Florence were in Rome prior to the their Coppa Italia final match with Napoli and the club had treated the team to a Vatican visit and meeting with Pope Francis. Photographing and recording the Pope in the Vatican and indeed, photographing and recording the interior of the Vatican itself, is contrary to Papal law. Regardless of whether or not the midfielder was aware of this, he has not yet removed the photo and recording from his Instagram account.

A number of Anderson's own fans have lambasted him for his actions, while Vatican officials are said to be furious not only with Anderson's rule breaking, but also with the example he is setting.
It would seem any prayers the Fiorentina team said during their trip, failed to pay off, as they lost the match 3-1.

Fan Killed by Flying Toilet

No, you read it right. A fan has been killed by a flying toilet in Brazil, the country that will play host to this year's World Cup.

Parana fan Paulo Ricardo Gomes da Silva died after being hit by a toilet thrown by fans of home team Santa Cruz, during a Brazilian second division match between the two sides.

The Santa Cruz fans had started ripping up the facilities of Estadio do Arruda, then threw them at the Parana fans, who had been leaving the stadium as instructed by the police.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. Unbelievably however, its not the first time Santa Cruz have been guilty of throwing toilets - they did the same thing earlier this year during their match with rival side Sport.

The Santa Cruz-Parana game finished 1-1, not that anyone appeared to care.

Grosskreutz Embroiled in Kebab Fiasco

Now there's a headline you might expect to see on the news following a team night out during Oktoberfest. There's more to this story than meets the eye though (you'll get that one when you read on). Yes folks, it's not just flying toilets on Football Circus this week, flying kebabs are also a feature, thanks to Borussia Dortmund's Kevin Grosskreutz.

The midfielder is in trouble after a Cologne fan filed a complaint to police that Grosskreutz had thrown a kebab at him, causing his eyes to burn.

To give the story a some context...Grosskreutz had been out with teammate Julian Schieber on Sunday night. Grosskreutz claims that while he and Schieber were outside a kebab shop, the fan, who was wearing a Cologne jersey, approached him and began shouting Grosskreutz's name over and over. In an interview with Bild newspaper, Grosskreutz claims that he threw his kebab on the ground in anger:
"I saw the situation as being offensive and saw my private sphere violated.

"Obviously I should have not thrown the kebab like that on the ground in public".

Grosskreutz's story that he merely threw the kebab on the ground, rather than at the fan, is clearly at odds with that of the fan who see things differently (through a pair of stinging eyes, allegedly).
Cologne police have stated:

"We have now started an investigation into the claim".

It's a Family Affair as Bosnian Manager Names Nephew in World Cup Sqaud

Bosnia-Herzegovina coach Safet Susic is feeling the wrath of his home country's media and fans alike, having named his nephew, Tino-Sven Susic, in his provisional World Cup squad. He has also come under fire for naming just two strikers in the squad - Man City's Eden Dzeko and Stuttgart's Veded Ibisevic.

With both the English and German leagues still with a weekend of matches to go, Susic is running a serious risk of being left with approximately no strikers for the competition, should Dzeko and Ibisevic both be unfortunate enough to pick up injuries prior to the tournament's kick-off in June.

Of his decision, Susic said:

"I don't really need more than two strikers because we will only start with one in our opening group match against Argentina".

Idiotic? Ballsy? We'll see in June.

On his nephew's inclusion, Susic joked:

"It’s because of his last name. He has a beautiful last name. No, but in all seriousness, Tino is a player we have to count on for the future. He’s a standard player at his club and he’s a good addition to the team. You can disagree with my choices, but I’m in a position to choose".

Despite Susic's whimsical approach to defending his nephew's inclusion, the media of Bosnia-Herzegovina have been shocked. Tino-Sven Susic has just one cap for his country to date.

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

It's been another busy week for Mario Balotelli. He took part in the Milan derby on Sunday and was on the winning side as AC ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a Nigel de Jong goal. It wasn't all smiles for Balo though, as he was subjected to racist chants by fans of his former club Inter on as many as five occasions during the match. Inter have subsequently been fined €50,000 for their fans' actions and have had a partial stadium ban imposed upon them for their San Siro encounter with Lazio on Saturday.

Serie A have released a statement, justifying the punishment:

"The Nerazzurri supporters on five occasions during the first half of the game directed chants of racial discrimination at Mario Balotelli.

"The same fans directed anti-Naples chants in the first half".

Perhaps the fans' antics spurred club legend's Javier Zanetti's decision to retire after the match.

Happily, Balo clearly hasn't let the ignorant fans' behaviour weigh on his mind too much as he took to Instagram this week to show off his impressive / bizarre show collection. Judging by the photo, don't be surprised to see a story breaking soon that Balo was actually a benefactor of Michael Jackson's will.

And in some final Balo news this week, former AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids, has told Sky Sport Italia that he would like to see Super Mario turn out for the Bianconeri. Davids told the Italian channel:

"I'd love to see Balotelli at Juventus.

"I think he can become the best".

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Zanetti Bids Farewell

Last week it was Rivaldo, this week we have another legend retiring from the football world in Javier Zanetti. Yes, as you may have already gathered from our Balotelli segment this week, Inter Milan's Argentine stalwart Javier Zanetti has finally decided to hang up his boots at forty years of age.

Speaking to La Nacion after Inter's defeat to Milan on Sunday, Zanetti said:

"I feel that now is the right time to do it.

"Football has given me so much and I have enjoyed every moment. Because after the achilles injury last April, I wanted to demonstrate that I could return and be competitive, but I could not.

"I feel complete and have realised that to retire at forty is a priceless feeling. For me it is something that has immense value, and now is the right time. Do I fear life after this? No, there is no fear.

"I dreamed of finishing my career at Inter, in my home, and I have. It was a lifestyle decision to end the career in Italy, and now, in the function of a sporting manager, I will try to be useful to the team away from the field.

"A new world opens for me, and that excites me. There will be a thousand things to do".

Maddened Mario

It's been a rollercoaster of a week. The 2014 Champions League finalists have been decided, the football world appeared united against racism thanks to Dani Alves and Brazilian builders realised that they may have to up their game if country's stadiums are to be ready for the World Cup. But don't mind all that Football Circus readers, because we know what you're really here for - Mario Balotelli losing his temper, dogs, dodgy haircuts and accidental injuries caused by teammates from lower league Norwegian teams. And guess what? That's exactly what we have for you this week...

Football Circus Clown Quote of the Week

"Well, I can play in the centre, on the right and occasionally on the left side". - David Beckham, when asked if he would consider himself a volatile player.

It's Barkelona as Crazed Dog Incensed at mention of Messi, Busquets

We love a good animal story here at Football Circus, whether they come in the form of mad mascots or pitch invaders. This week though, footage of a Barcelona-hating dog has surfaced on Youtube. We felt it would be remiss of us not to cover it.

The dog, seemingly a Real Madrid 'supporter', remains completing placid at the mention of Madrid stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo. Whisper the name of Lionel Messi or Sergio Busquets however, and the mutt turns from cute pooch to a crazy-eyed, demonic looking, snarling devil dog.

Lets hope Madrid don't offer the mongrel a role as their new mascot, or the next Clasico could be a even more of a bloodbath than usual.

Short Back and Sides? No, Just a Pepperoni and Cheese

Footballer's haircuts often leave a lot to be desired (Rigobert Song, Abel Xavier and Jason Lee to mention but a few, have had particularly dodgy barnets) but this week Dominic Oduro of Columbus Crew has taken the biscuit...or should we say 'pizza'.

Oduro, who proclaims himself to be a pizza lover, tweeted a photo of his new do and it has left fans wondering whether a razor or a pizza cutter was used to style his hair.

But the ridiculous hair design is not Oduro's only attempt to show the world just how much he loves pizza. He once ate a slice after scoring for Columbus Crew as part of a goal celebration.

He has also tweeted various pizza photos, raves about Papa John's and even tweeted a photo of two heart-shaped pizzas he received from Papa John's for Valentines Day. We just hope Oduro's hairstyle doesn't have a Dominos effect and catch on.

Norwegian Player Injures Teammate Before Kickoff

David Batty and Graeme Le Saux famously had an on-pitch bust up whilst teammates at Blackburn. So too did Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer at Newcastle. However those particular incidents were solely down to two players consciously aiming to knock seven shades of the proverbial out of each other. So you have to feel for Norwegian side Bossekop UL, whose players seem to be inadvertently taking each other out...before their matches even start!

Bossekop took on Alta IF in the Norwegian Cup at the weekend. During the warmup, one of their players, Mathias Dahl Abelsen attempted to jump on the shoulders of Martin Mathisen. Somehow, Abelsen managed to miss and as gravity took effect, Mathisen decided to jump himself, leading to a clash of heads. Mathisen was left requiring six stitches and Abelsen was left with a very red face.

At 41 Years Young, Rivaldo Finally Hangs Up Boots

Not too long ago we reported that Rivaldo had turned out for Brazilian lower league side, Mogi Mirim, alongside his son in a ground that was named after Rivaldo's father. Truth be known, we were surprised to find that the World Cup winning former Barca star was even still playing. So it comes as little shock, to hear that at the ripe old age of 41, he has decided to finally hang up his boots. And what better way to announce his retirement, than via social media websites Twitter and Instagram (Original or what?).
Rivaldo declared:

"With tears in my eyes today I would like first to thank God, my family and all the support (and) the affection that I received during those 24 years as a player.

"Today, I communicate to all my fans in the world (that) my history as a player came to the end.

"I built my career upon a miracle, (living) in (the small city of) Paulista, no financial resources, no businessman, incentives only of my family, discredited by doctors and trainers.

"With persistence, dedication and especially with the hand of God, I came to be recognized as the best player in the world, world champion".

Humble till the end Rivaldo.

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

Balotelli has caused a mighty stir in Italy this week after Milan lost 2-0 to Roma. Following criticism from former Milan midfielder Zvonimir Boban (now a pundit), Balotelli's post match interview became an angry rant, following which he removed his earpiece while the interview was seemingly still going on.
Balotelli had by most accounts, had a poor game, and was subbed off in the 69th minute. In the Sky Italia studio, Boban had slammed Balo as "not (being) a top player".

In a "Why always me?" vein, Super Mario responded:

"You always talk about me.

"When Milan win Mario’s great, but when Milan lose it’s all Mario’s fault. I don’t need your criticism, I criticise myself.

“I never said I’m a top player, I am a perfectly normal player, it’s you that say I am an exceptional player, you always expect me to score five goals a game.

"You always talk and talk, but there is no point to saying any of these things. There is no point at all.

"You don’t understand anything about football – trust me, you really don’t".

Jose Mourinho and Jamie Redknapp are going to need to step things up a notch if they're to match this feud!

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Del Piero Done Down Under

Following a two year stint at A-League side Sydney FC, Italian football legend Alessandro Del Piero has released a statement on his website announcing that he will be leaving the club. After becoming something of an institution at Juventus, Del Boy opted for a complete change of scene in 2012 when he signed for Aussie side Sydney. His presence was of huge benefit both to Sydney FC and to the Australian A-League and helped greatly in rousing interest in the sport in a country where rugby, cricket and Aussie rules already compete for the public's attention.

Del Piero's statement read:

"My adventure with Sydney FC is about to be concluded, and, even if it makes me rather sad, because I have had wonderful time here, I have communicated my decision to the club.

"I'm really grateful for the last two years and for the club's request for me to remain and with whom, I am happy to explore new opportunities to continue our relationship. It hasn't been an easy choice, also because my life on and off the pitch has been fantastic, my family and I have really enjoyed these two wonderful years: Australia will remain in our hearts forever.

"My greatest satisfaction is the rapid growth of the Australian football movement, with interest increasing incredibly for the public, television and sponsors, in this country, considered to be an undisputed role model in the world of sportive culture (both for athletes and spectators), the passion for this sport , that I love so much, is constantly growing.

"I will remain a bit 'Australian', and will continue to be close to the football movement in this country and the Australian Football Federation, also as ambassador of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, that will take place right here next year. See ya mates".

So where next for Del Piero? Asia? The MLS? A return to Italy with his first club Padova? Or, at 39 years old, will the veteran decide its time to call it a day? One thing that is certain - He will play one final match, lining out for the Hyundai A-League All Stars in a match to be played in Sydney. The opposition? Juventus.
