The Tale of the Footballer, the Kebab and the Police

We have reached our 60th edition of Football Circus and what better way to celebrate than to regale our beloved readers with some of the most bizarre stories you're likely to come across this week on a football website? What have we got lined up? A fan being killed by a flying toilet; The tale of the German footballer, the kebab and the police; Some casual nepotism and; Anderson getting on the wrong side of Pope Francis. So prepare to be flabergasted and welcome, as always, to Football Circus...

Football Circus Clown Quote of the Week

"I'm as happy as I can be...but I have been happier".

- Ugo Ehiogu

Papa Don't Preach - Because Anderson Won't Listen

Fiorentina loanee Anderson has found himself in a spot of bother after getting a little too snap-happy during a team visit to the Vatican. The Brazilian, on loan from Manchester United, uploaded a photo of Il Papa to his Instagram account last week, along with a video of the interior of the Sistine Chapel.

The side from Florence were in Rome prior to the their Coppa Italia final match with Napoli and the club had treated the team to a Vatican visit and meeting with Pope Francis. Photographing and recording the Pope in the Vatican and indeed, photographing and recording the interior of the Vatican itself, is contrary to Papal law. Regardless of whether or not the midfielder was aware of this, he has not yet removed the photo and recording from his Instagram account.

A number of Anderson's own fans have lambasted him for his actions, while Vatican officials are said to be furious not only with Anderson's rule breaking, but also with the example he is setting.
It would seem any prayers the Fiorentina team said during their trip, failed to pay off, as they lost the match 3-1.

Fan Killed by Flying Toilet

No, you read it right. A fan has been killed by a flying toilet in Brazil, the country that will play host to this year's World Cup.

Parana fan Paulo Ricardo Gomes da Silva died after being hit by a toilet thrown by fans of home team Santa Cruz, during a Brazilian second division match between the two sides.

The Santa Cruz fans had started ripping up the facilities of Estadio do Arruda, then threw them at the Parana fans, who had been leaving the stadium as instructed by the police.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. Unbelievably however, its not the first time Santa Cruz have been guilty of throwing toilets - they did the same thing earlier this year during their match with rival side Sport.

The Santa Cruz-Parana game finished 1-1, not that anyone appeared to care.

Grosskreutz Embroiled in Kebab Fiasco

Now there's a headline you might expect to see on the news following a team night out during Oktoberfest. There's more to this story than meets the eye though (you'll get that one when you read on). Yes folks, it's not just flying toilets on Football Circus this week, flying kebabs are also a feature, thanks to Borussia Dortmund's Kevin Grosskreutz.

The midfielder is in trouble after a Cologne fan filed a complaint to police that Grosskreutz had thrown a kebab at him, causing his eyes to burn.

To give the story a some context...Grosskreutz had been out with teammate Julian Schieber on Sunday night. Grosskreutz claims that while he and Schieber were outside a kebab shop, the fan, who was wearing a Cologne jersey, approached him and began shouting Grosskreutz's name over and over. In an interview with Bild newspaper, Grosskreutz claims that he threw his kebab on the ground in anger:
"I saw the situation as being offensive and saw my private sphere violated.

"Obviously I should have not thrown the kebab like that on the ground in public".

Grosskreutz's story that he merely threw the kebab on the ground, rather than at the fan, is clearly at odds with that of the fan who see things differently (through a pair of stinging eyes, allegedly).
Cologne police have stated:

"We have now started an investigation into the claim".

It's a Family Affair as Bosnian Manager Names Nephew in World Cup Sqaud

Bosnia-Herzegovina coach Safet Susic is feeling the wrath of his home country's media and fans alike, having named his nephew, Tino-Sven Susic, in his provisional World Cup squad. He has also come under fire for naming just two strikers in the squad - Man City's Eden Dzeko and Stuttgart's Veded Ibisevic.

With both the English and German leagues still with a weekend of matches to go, Susic is running a serious risk of being left with approximately no strikers for the competition, should Dzeko and Ibisevic both be unfortunate enough to pick up injuries prior to the tournament's kick-off in June.

Of his decision, Susic said:

"I don't really need more than two strikers because we will only start with one in our opening group match against Argentina".

Idiotic? Ballsy? We'll see in June.

On his nephew's inclusion, Susic joked:

"It’s because of his last name. He has a beautiful last name. No, but in all seriousness, Tino is a player we have to count on for the future. He’s a standard player at his club and he’s a good addition to the team. You can disagree with my choices, but I’m in a position to choose".

Despite Susic's whimsical approach to defending his nephew's inclusion, the media of Bosnia-Herzegovina have been shocked. Tino-Sven Susic has just one cap for his country to date.

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

It's been another busy week for Mario Balotelli. He took part in the Milan derby on Sunday and was on the winning side as AC ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a Nigel de Jong goal. It wasn't all smiles for Balo though, as he was subjected to racist chants by fans of his former club Inter on as many as five occasions during the match. Inter have subsequently been fined €50,000 for their fans' actions and have had a partial stadium ban imposed upon them for their San Siro encounter with Lazio on Saturday.

Serie A have released a statement, justifying the punishment:

"The Nerazzurri supporters on five occasions during the first half of the game directed chants of racial discrimination at Mario Balotelli.

"The same fans directed anti-Naples chants in the first half".

Perhaps the fans' antics spurred club legend's Javier Zanetti's decision to retire after the match.

Happily, Balo clearly hasn't let the ignorant fans' behaviour weigh on his mind too much as he took to Instagram this week to show off his impressive / bizarre show collection. Judging by the photo, don't be surprised to see a story breaking soon that Balo was actually a benefactor of Michael Jackson's will.

And in some final Balo news this week, former AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids, has told Sky Sport Italia that he would like to see Super Mario turn out for the Bianconeri. Davids told the Italian channel:

"I'd love to see Balotelli at Juventus.

"I think he can become the best".

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Zanetti Bids Farewell

Last week it was Rivaldo, this week we have another legend retiring from the football world in Javier Zanetti. Yes, as you may have already gathered from our Balotelli segment this week, Inter Milan's Argentine stalwart Javier Zanetti has finally decided to hang up his boots at forty years of age.

Speaking to La Nacion after Inter's defeat to Milan on Sunday, Zanetti said:

"I feel that now is the right time to do it.

"Football has given me so much and I have enjoyed every moment. Because after the achilles injury last April, I wanted to demonstrate that I could return and be competitive, but I could not.

"I feel complete and have realised that to retire at forty is a priceless feeling. For me it is something that has immense value, and now is the right time. Do I fear life after this? No, there is no fear.

"I dreamed of finishing my career at Inter, in my home, and I have. It was a lifestyle decision to end the career in Italy, and now, in the function of a sporting manager, I will try to be useful to the team away from the field.

"A new world opens for me, and that excites me. There will be a thousand things to do".

Maddened Mario

It's been a rollercoaster of a week. The 2014 Champions League finalists have been decided, the football world appeared united against racism thanks to Dani Alves and Brazilian builders realised that they may have to up their game if country's stadiums are to be ready for the World Cup. But don't mind all that Football Circus readers, because we know what you're really here for - Mario Balotelli losing his temper, dogs, dodgy haircuts and accidental injuries caused by teammates from lower league Norwegian teams. And guess what? That's exactly what we have for you this week...

Football Circus Clown Quote of the Week

"Well, I can play in the centre, on the right and occasionally on the left side". - David Beckham, when asked if he would consider himself a volatile player.

It's Barkelona as Crazed Dog Incensed at mention of Messi, Busquets

We love a good animal story here at Football Circus, whether they come in the form of mad mascots or pitch invaders. This week though, footage of a Barcelona-hating dog has surfaced on Youtube. We felt it would be remiss of us not to cover it.

The dog, seemingly a Real Madrid 'supporter', remains completing placid at the mention of Madrid stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo. Whisper the name of Lionel Messi or Sergio Busquets however, and the mutt turns from cute pooch to a crazy-eyed, demonic looking, snarling devil dog.

Lets hope Madrid don't offer the mongrel a role as their new mascot, or the next Clasico could be a even more of a bloodbath than usual.

Short Back and Sides? No, Just a Pepperoni and Cheese

Footballer's haircuts often leave a lot to be desired (Rigobert Song, Abel Xavier and Jason Lee to mention but a few, have had particularly dodgy barnets) but this week Dominic Oduro of Columbus Crew has taken the biscuit...or should we say 'pizza'.

Oduro, who proclaims himself to be a pizza lover, tweeted a photo of his new do and it has left fans wondering whether a razor or a pizza cutter was used to style his hair.

But the ridiculous hair design is not Oduro's only attempt to show the world just how much he loves pizza. He once ate a slice after scoring for Columbus Crew as part of a goal celebration.

He has also tweeted various pizza photos, raves about Papa John's and even tweeted a photo of two heart-shaped pizzas he received from Papa John's for Valentines Day. We just hope Oduro's hairstyle doesn't have a Dominos effect and catch on.

Norwegian Player Injures Teammate Before Kickoff

David Batty and Graeme Le Saux famously had an on-pitch bust up whilst teammates at Blackburn. So too did Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer at Newcastle. However those particular incidents were solely down to two players consciously aiming to knock seven shades of the proverbial out of each other. So you have to feel for Norwegian side Bossekop UL, whose players seem to be inadvertently taking each other out...before their matches even start!

Bossekop took on Alta IF in the Norwegian Cup at the weekend. During the warmup, one of their players, Mathias Dahl Abelsen attempted to jump on the shoulders of Martin Mathisen. Somehow, Abelsen managed to miss and as gravity took effect, Mathisen decided to jump himself, leading to a clash of heads. Mathisen was left requiring six stitches and Abelsen was left with a very red face.

At 41 Years Young, Rivaldo Finally Hangs Up Boots

Not too long ago we reported that Rivaldo had turned out for Brazilian lower league side, Mogi Mirim, alongside his son in a ground that was named after Rivaldo's father. Truth be known, we were surprised to find that the World Cup winning former Barca star was even still playing. So it comes as little shock, to hear that at the ripe old age of 41, he has decided to finally hang up his boots. And what better way to announce his retirement, than via social media websites Twitter and Instagram (Original or what?).
Rivaldo declared:

"With tears in my eyes today I would like first to thank God, my family and all the support (and) the affection that I received during those 24 years as a player.

"Today, I communicate to all my fans in the world (that) my history as a player came to the end.

"I built my career upon a miracle, (living) in (the small city of) Paulista, no financial resources, no businessman, incentives only of my family, discredited by doctors and trainers.

"With persistence, dedication and especially with the hand of God, I came to be recognized as the best player in the world, world champion".

Humble till the end Rivaldo.

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

Balotelli has caused a mighty stir in Italy this week after Milan lost 2-0 to Roma. Following criticism from former Milan midfielder Zvonimir Boban (now a pundit), Balotelli's post match interview became an angry rant, following which he removed his earpiece while the interview was seemingly still going on.
Balotelli had by most accounts, had a poor game, and was subbed off in the 69th minute. In the Sky Italia studio, Boban had slammed Balo as "not (being) a top player".

In a "Why always me?" vein, Super Mario responded:

"You always talk about me.

"When Milan win Mario’s great, but when Milan lose it’s all Mario’s fault. I don’t need your criticism, I criticise myself.

“I never said I’m a top player, I am a perfectly normal player, it’s you that say I am an exceptional player, you always expect me to score five goals a game.

"You always talk and talk, but there is no point to saying any of these things. There is no point at all.

"You don’t understand anything about football – trust me, you really don’t".

Jose Mourinho and Jamie Redknapp are going to need to step things up a notch if they're to match this feud!

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Del Piero Done Down Under

Following a two year stint at A-League side Sydney FC, Italian football legend Alessandro Del Piero has released a statement on his website announcing that he will be leaving the club. After becoming something of an institution at Juventus, Del Boy opted for a complete change of scene in 2012 when he signed for Aussie side Sydney. His presence was of huge benefit both to Sydney FC and to the Australian A-League and helped greatly in rousing interest in the sport in a country where rugby, cricket and Aussie rules already compete for the public's attention.

Del Piero's statement read:

"My adventure with Sydney FC is about to be concluded, and, even if it makes me rather sad, because I have had wonderful time here, I have communicated my decision to the club.

"I'm really grateful for the last two years and for the club's request for me to remain and with whom, I am happy to explore new opportunities to continue our relationship. It hasn't been an easy choice, also because my life on and off the pitch has been fantastic, my family and I have really enjoyed these two wonderful years: Australia will remain in our hearts forever.

"My greatest satisfaction is the rapid growth of the Australian football movement, with interest increasing incredibly for the public, television and sponsors, in this country, considered to be an undisputed role model in the world of sportive culture (both for athletes and spectators), the passion for this sport , that I love so much, is constantly growing.

"I will remain a bit 'Australian', and will continue to be close to the football movement in this country and the Australian Football Federation, also as ambassador of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, that will take place right here next year. See ya mates".

So where next for Del Piero? Asia? The MLS? A return to Italy with his first club Padova? Or, at 39 years old, will the veteran decide its time to call it a day? One thing that is certain - He will play one final match, lining out for the Hyundai A-League All Stars in a match to be played in Sydney. The opposition? Juventus.

Dear Brazil, this World Cup We'd Like...

You want more bloody David Moyes news? You want the latest team news for the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals? The latest on Barcelona's transfer ban appeal? No you ruddy well don't. You want to hear magical tales of Burger King mocking footballers, international managers making silly errors, US police officers beating fans of a girls high school team and the diva-like demands of overpaid men who chase a ball for a living. And you've come to the right place. Welcome to this week's Football Circus. Now read you mugs!

Mess with Gignac? Whopper Mistake

France and Marseille striker Andre Pierre Gignac is not a happy man...For he has been nationally ridiculed in his home country...by Burger King!

Gignac is often the subject of mockery in France due to his stocky build. In fact even fans of his own club, Marseille, are known to poke fun, singing "A Big Mac for Gignac". In spite of his physique, or perhaps because of it, he is currently of Ligue 1's top scorers. So the striker could be excused for thinking the jibes may ease. Unfortunately for Gignac however, fast food giants Burger King have attempted to capitalise on the "Big Mac for Gignac" song, by releasing an ad with a slogan of their own - "A Whopper for Gignac".

According to reports in the French media, Gignac has failed to see the funny side and after teammates stuck some of the posters up in the dressing room, he is said to be contemplating legal action against Burger King.

Carless Quieroz

David Moyes may not be the only former Man United coach that springs to mind this week for serious lapses in judgement. Regardless, Fergie's former number two, now managing the Iranian national team, has been left rather red-faced after failing to review a fixture list.

In preparation for his side's participation in this summer's World Cup, Queiroz arranged a training camp for the team in South Africa. Nothing wrong with that, in fact he could even be commended for his efforts.

Queiroz called up 28 plyaers to the squad. However, only eleven of the players called up will be able to partake. Not only are many of the team's European based players still playing out their respective teams' seasons, players from Asian sides Esteghlal, Tractor Sazi, Foolad and Sepahan will not be present due to their involvement in the Asian Champions League - a factor which Queiroz seemingly failed to consider.

Nonetheless, the training camp will run for 23 days and Queiroz is hopeful that more players will join up with the squad once their club sides' seasons finish up.

US High School Students attacked by Police

US sawcer fans aren't exactly known for their hooliganism or unruly behaviour. So it may come as a surprise to learn that a police officer in Texas took it upon himself to attack fans of a girls' high school soccer team who ran onto the pitch to celebrate their teams victory.

Youtube footage surfaced this week, of crazed cop George Bermudez of the Georgetown Police Department, who tripped and pushed students from Vandegrift High School after their side won the state championship. Local media have been quick to pick up on the story and Bermudez has now been placed on administrative leave.

Captain Rowland Waits of the police department told NY Daily News:

"I want to stress to the community that this behavior is not in line with the way we want to conduct business.

"Know that we take complaints like this seriously".

Dear Brazil, this World Cup We'd Like...

Brazilian sports website Lancenet.com have somehow gotten their hands on a list of hotel and training demands made by a number of the sides partipating in this summer's World Cup. Most seem pretty reasonable we're sure you'll agree, but as you'll see below, some are slightly out of left field, even extravagent (we're looking your way Japan):

Algeria: Copy of the Koran in the rooms of every player.

Australia: Large coffee makers. Newspapers from around the world to be available daily.

Chile: New beds and new flatscreen televisions in the rooms of every player.

Colombia: Fifteen youth team players to be provided by Sao Paulo to provide assistance and partake in training matches if necessary.

Costa Rica: A large leisure room with sofas, televisions and video games.

Ecuador: The provision of a fresh bunch of Ecuadorian bananas to be put in every player's room daily. A traditional Ecuadorian barbeque to be provided on the players' arrival to the hotel.

France: Liquid soaps as the French, apparently, have a dislike for soap bars. Kosher food for their Muslim players. A leisure room with video games.

Honduras: Six Spanish-language television channels for the players' rooms, including two Honduran channels. High speed wi-fi. Some bedrooms to be converted into offices for coaching staff.

Iran: The assistance of Corinthians including their cleaning staff (Carlos Queiroz has worked with their manager Edu Gaspar - Let's just hope for Queiroz's sake that Gaspar is good with fixture lists).

Japan: Individual rooms for the players at Sport Spa resort in Itu, where each room will have a jacuzzi tub.

Portugal: Each room to have a video games console

Switzerland: High speed internet. Six Swiss television channels in the players' rooms. A studio to be constructed beside Muta beach where the team are staying, which can host exclusive player interviews.
Uruguay: Silent air conditioners for each player's rooms. Large walls to be constructed around their training facilities to prevent the media and fans from viewing their sessions.

What's Mad Mario Upto this Week?

Balotelli had a particularly successful weekend, with a goal and an assist for Milan against Livorno in Serie A, helping them to a 3-0 victory. The win meant Milan go within five points of city rivals Inter and should they overtake them will gain a Europa League spot. If that wasn't enough, the goal took Balo's tally for the season to 14 league goals, the best he has ever racked up in his career to date. Said Balotelli of the feat:

"I'm happy to have reached the record but I have to improve, because there are players that score 40 in a season".

He was also questioned about the pressure manager Clarence Seedorf is under at AC Milan, with rumours that his job is under threat:

"I didn't know anything about that.

"The coach has given a big hand to the squad...But this is still nothing. It's just a great result. We're playing to qualify for the Europa League".

Meanwhile, Milan teammate Nigal De Jong has hailed Balotelli to being akin to a Ferrari.

Speaking to Forza magazine, De Jong said:

"In my view, Balotelli can be compared to a Ferrarri.

"He is powerful and unpredictable".

Italian Football Story of the Week

- Mourinho back to Inter?

Jose Mourinho's second tenure at Chelsea has not been seen in quite the same light as his first spell. Despite the team still challenging for both the Premier League and Champions League, Mourinho looks a shadow of his former self and seems more prone to outbursts than ever before. No surprise then, that he has been linked with a possible move up north to take over the now manager-less Manchester United. Speaking with Tele Lombardia however, honourary Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has admitted that he often muses over whether Mourinho could be tempted back to Milan:

"I often think we could bring back Jose rather than buying lots of players, but it requires common sense.

"We also mustn’t forget he only arrived because of Roberto Mancini’s post-Liverpool outburst. It was difficult to tell Mancini we had signed another Coach while the Scudetto celebrations were going on.

"Mourinho confirmed his great professionalism. I warned him we’d need to wait for Mancini and he said he’d remain at my disposal without contacting other clubs. He kept his word.

"Jose did not find satisfaction at Real Madrid, but now he is at Chelsea, another club he is fond of. I know that he’d come back here to Inter. He can’t right now, but maybe he’ll arrive later on after Walter Mazzarri, who is another very good Coach, has won three Scudetti".
